Vocal Jazz

Garfield High School Vocal Jazz is a 20-member group, composed mainly of upperclassmen, that performs and competes extensively. Vocal Jazz requires a heartfelt commitment from its devoted singers, many of whom are student leaders, athletes and scholars. While most Vocal Jazz students are members of Concert Choir, they have additional rehearsals after school 4 days per week.  Auditions are held annually for current GHS Students. The focus of this ensemble is to develop jazz idioms including vocal improvisation, sight reading and performance skills via high quality jazz repertoire.

Vocal Jazz enjoys a busy year of travel, performances, and competitions including all of the Concert Choir performances plus:
  • Out-of-state jazz festivals and competitions that have included the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho; The Genesis Fall Festival at Mt Hood, Oregon, and The Reno Jazz Festival
  • Annual professional CD recording
  • Annual Vocal Jazz Night solo performance at Seattle’s Royal Room in Columbia City
  • Private and public performances
Vocal Jazz has earned the following awards:
